Most men don’t spend much time thinking about what it means to be a man. This is because in our society, being a man is an advantage, one that doesn’t usually invite self-reflection. And even when men are interested in discussing such issues, they are often wary of being seen as politically incorrect and chauvinistic. As a male therapist who works regularly with men, I often think of my male clients and their underlying masculinity. I have seen for myself how restrictive and disturbing gender roles are in some of the men I work with. By “gender roles” I mean the often implicit and explicit messages men receive from society about how to behave like men. Most of us will immediately recognize the old saying that being a man usually means: Be strong, maintain control, never cry, overcome physical pain, provide for a family, and never back down from a fight.
While these roles provide men with a viable modus operandi, they can also be very restrictive.
